Gallery News – Leadership Changing

January 23, 2023

After 42 years of service, Sharon Godwin will be stepping down as Director of the Thunder Bay Art Gallery on June 30, 2023, after holding the position since 1989.

Godwin began her career with the Gallery in 1981 and in addition to her role as Director, Sharon has led the Waterfront Relocation Project for the last 12 years.

Christine Bates, Chair of the Board of Directors the Art Gallery made the announcement today.

A national search for a new Director is underway.

Bates explained, ‘Last fall, Godwin proposed to the Board that she vacate her position to make way for a new Director in anticipation of the opening of the new gallery on the City’s waterfront in 2025’.

Godwin will continue to work as the Waterfront Project Lead until the opening of the new building.

Speaking on behalf of the Gallery’s Board of Directors, Bates noted, ‘Sharon Godwin’s contribution to the arts in Thunder Bay, northwestern Ontario, the province and Canada has been exemplary.’

‘She leads with compassion, understanding, openness, courage and humour and the staff and Board wish her the very best in her new adventures.  We are especially appreciative that she has agreed to stay on in the capacity of Waterfront Project Lead to see the new gallery at the waterfront through to completion,’ Bates said.

‘Serving as Director of the Thunder Bay Art Gallery has been a privilege. It’s been a joy and an honour to meet and work with the many dedicated staff, volunteers, Board Members, artists, educators and community members who give life to the Gallery and the community.’ said Godwin.
