The Jingle Dress

This summer, the Thunder Bay Art Gallery celebrates a major acquisition by artist Christian Chapman. In 2022 the Thunder Bay Art Gallery received the York Wilson Endowment Award which funded the acquisition of 11 paintings by Chapman from the series Ziibaaska’iganagoodayan – The Jingle Dress.

The Anishinaabe kwe depicted in these pop-art style paintings are Chapman's friends, family, and fellow artists. By keeping this series of paintings in Thunder Bay, the Gallery aims to honour past, present, and future generations in the community.

Artist Bio:

Christian Chapman (b. 1975) is of Anishinabe heritage from Fort William First Nation, Ontario. He creates two-dimensional mixed-media artwork that fuses elements of painting, drawing and printmaking. The Anishinaabe women depicted in the newly acquired portraits are his friends, family, and fellow artists. The act of storytelling has been an important part of Chapman’s life: it has informed him of his culture by shaping his identity, personal experiences, and worldview.

Opening reception June 23rd, 2023.
