A NEW ERA

Perched on the shores of Lake Superior, the Thunder Bay Art Gallery’s new waterfront home is both a cultural landmark and a living expression of place and values. Framing the awe-inspiring Sleeping Giant, the building’s design echoes the land’s presence while transforming a former industrial brownfield into a safe, green, carbon-neutral space. As the first development on this stretch of waterfront, the Gallery sets the tone for a vibrant district envisioned with cultural venues, housing, hotels, and more. At its heart, the Gallery will serve as a beacon of creativity and belonging, honouring the land while fostering community and connection.

A WORLD-CLASS GALLERY

A Historic Investment in Art and Community

For nearly five decades, the Thunder Bay Art Gallery has connected people with art and championed contemporary Indigenous and regional artists. To safeguard its collection and expand programming, the Gallery is building a world-class waterfront facility. With over $51M raised, construction began in 2023, marking one of the region’s most significant cultural initiatives.

THE NEED

Growing to Serve More

The Thunder Bay Art Gallery has outgrown its facility on the Confederation College campus, with limited space restricting exhibitions and programs despite rising demand. A new waterfront home is essential to showcase the permanent collection locally, support expanded programming, and position the Gallery as a vibrant cultural hub and landmark in Northern Ontario’s growing arts and tourism landscape.
