SUBJECT: The Thunder Bay Art Gallery Announces Indigenous Ways Associate Curator Position, Supported by TD Bank Group
WHERE: Thunder Bay Art Gallery, 1080 Keewatin St. Thunder Bay, ON

The Thunder Bay Art Gallery is proud to announce the creation and ongoing support of a new position: TD Associate Curator Indigenous Ways. The position is supported by a $300K donation from TD Bank Group (TD) through the TD Ready Commitment, the Bank’s corporate citizenship platform.

The role reflects the Thunder Bay Art Gallery’s commitment to Truth and Reconciliation, equity, diversity and inclusion, and response to the needs of our community, forming meaningful partnerships with like-minded organizations across sectors. With support from TD, the position responds to the specific requirements of the Gallery and our community in Northern Ontario.

The TD Associate Curator Indigenous Ways is a dedicated position that will focus on fostering and sharing the knowledge and expertise of the Indigenous community throughout the Gallery. It responds to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action for art museums and advances decolonization in alignment with the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP), guided by the Canadian Museums Association’s Indigenous-led Moved to Action framework.

“Art has a unique way of bringing people together and creating space for shared stories and perspectives,” said Terry Copenace, Senior Regional Manager, Indigenous Banking Group, TD Bank Group. “Through the TD Ready Commitment, we’re proud to support the Thunder Bay Art Gallery as it creates opportunities for voices from Indigenous communities to be shared and heard.”

“We are deeply grateful for TD’s visionary support of this position.” Executive Director Matthew R. Hills said, “Their investment in the work of the Gallery in our 50th anniversary year, at a time of transformative growth for not only our institution but our broader community, reflects shared values and commitment, we look forward to working alongside TD to create new pathways, opportunities and change in our sector. “

The Thunder Bay Art Gallery’s commitment to inclusion, respect, and education allows for the uplifting of voices from Indigenous communities, and art, championing the creativity and stories of artists from all backgrounds. Through collaboration with Indigenous leaders and community members, and emerging funding supporters like TD, the Gallery continues to shape and renew its commitment to the community it serves.

This new position will embed and braid Indigenous ways into the Gallery, further cultivating inclusive spaces for learning, dialogue, and healing. Through the curation of Gallery exhibitions, initiation of new relationships and programs, and continued relations with Gallery elders in support of protocol and seasonal observances this position will cultivate Indigenous Ways. These efforts will strengthen relationships between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples, contributing to a more connected and equitable community in Northern Ontario.
