Botanical Printing on Silk w/ Tuija Hansen

During this workshop, participants will delve into the fascinating chemistry and artistry of botanical dyeing, discovering what happens when flowers rich in natural dye compounds interact with pre-mordanted cloth. Explore with local artist Tuija Hansen the vibrant colour potential of a variety of homegrown, native, and invasive flower species found in Northwestern Ontario. 

Artist Bio: Tuija Hansen is a textile artist and educator based in Lappe, a culturally vibrant community north of Thunder Bay, situated within the Robinson-Superior Treaty territory. Her creative practice weaves together ethical foraging, gardening, plant dyeing, and handweaving, blending traditional and contemporary techniques. Inspired by the centuries-old art of colouring textiles for personal and domestic use, Tuija captures the hues of her natural surroundings using plant-based dyes. Her passion for this work has led her to artist residencies across Canada, Scotland, Finland, and Iceland, where she continues to explore the intersection of research, tradition, and hands-on making.
