The Thunder Bay Art Gallery’s Creative Aging initiative aims to re-engage seniors in meaningful, arts-based activities that foster social inclusion, emotional well-being, and community connection. Creative Aging welcomes diverse senior communities and provides accessible workshops and events. Clay Surface Decorating with Anthony Santoro
April 3, 2025 – Thunder Bay Art Gallery
Explore the art of decorating clay surfaces using coloured slips, a liquid mixture of clay. Learn to create slip transfers and apply your own design to an unfired porcelain vessel. After the session, your work will be kept for firing and available for pickup at the Gallery. Kiln firing schedules vary, and participants will be contacted when Gallery pickup is available.
Acrylic Owl Paintings with Leanna Rosengren

Join artist Leanna Rosengren as she guides you step-by-step, sharing techniques and tips to bring your own painting of an owl to life. Whether you’re following along or working from your own reference image, she’ll help you apply key skills to make your composition shine. Perfect for beginners or those looking to explore techniques.
Linocut Printmaking with Leanna Rosengren
June 5, 2025 – Thunder Bay At Gallery
Create a linocut in this hands-on workshop and make several prints to share! Linocut is a printmaking technique where sharp tools like V-shaped gouges are used to remove material, and the raised (uncarved) areas are inked and printed. Explore carving techniques, the printmaking process, and unique inking methods with local artist Leanna Rosengren.
Beadwork Basics with Erin Szturm

Whether you are new to sewing or love working with a needle and thread this workshop is a great
opportunity to make something beautiful! Everything required to make a simple beaded floral
applique will be provided. Once finished, you can add your unique project to clothing or an
accessory
Drawing from Life with Erin Szturm
August 7, 2025 – 55 Plus Centre
Drawing by directly observing people and objects is a fundamental practice for artists. Have fun
while you build hand-eye coordination and explore mark-making with materials as you progress
through short sketches leading up to a one hour fully completed drawing.
Eco-Printing with Tuija Hansen
September 4th, 2025 – Thunder Bay Art Gallery
Participants are invited to bring flowers from their garden as well as use Tuija’s homegrown and foraged flowers to create a one-of-a-kind floral printed bandana. Join a discussion about plants and design your own kerchief while you consider the feelings and memories you associate with flowers. While waiting for projects to steam, discuss the dyeing process, ask questions, and freewrite inspired by your experience.
Watercolour Explorations with Alicia Brink
October 2nd, 2025 – North McIntyre Centre
Discover the freedom and versatility of watercolors! With just pigments, water, paper, and brushes you can create beautiful paintings anytime, anywhere. In this hands-on workshop, you’ll assemble your own palette and work on a personal piece while learning essential techniques. By the end, you’ll feel confident using watercolors on the go—whether at home, in nature, or on your travels!

Miniature Broom Crafting with Alicia Brink
December 4th, 2025 – Location To Be Confirmed
Sweep out the old and start your new year learning how to craft your own little brooms. These fully functional mini brooms can be used as an offering to the May- may-quay-so-wuk (the little people), as decorations, or for small cleaning jobs like your keyboard. All supplies are included to create two mini brooms.
