Janna Brown: Still Echoes Resound

June 12 – September 6 (extended to September 13)
Organized by Tangled Arts + Disability

Artist Talk and Festival Launch: June 11 at 7:30 pm

Still Echoes Resound is a collection of twelve miniature-embroideries rendered on fragments of leather and a childhood quilt. The series is representational and abstracted—feminine figures with traces of quilted flowers, geometrical shapes, and superimposed designs appearing on and beneath their forms. Each work is reminiscent of body and landscape while maintaining an air of escaping its edges.

The tableaus are transformed into moving image through a technique of overlay and repetition in a video best described as an illustrated poem. The text emerges from within the layers of the video’s frames with embroidery and drawings surfacing and retreating to the rhythm of words. The work is also a durational piece as the artist undertook to embroider each day for a period of eight months—carrying the tableaus on her person every day. This took place over the course of an artist residency with Tangled Art + Disability, in which the artist proposed to revisit a lived experience of trauma through tender and intricate vignettes. Embroidery became a daily practice and a documentation of artistic, physic, and emotional journeys.
