Drawn From Legends: Works From the Permanent Collection

January 21 – March  8

Often passed down from one generation on to the next, legends and stories profoundly inform and shape our worldview. These stories can be altogether instructive, cautionary or simply humorous in their telling. For artists like Jackson Beardy, Carl Ray and Norval Morrisseau, stories were integral to their upbringing and daily life. Moreover, stories such as the ones on Misshupishu, the great underwater lynx for example, tell us about the sacredness of the Great Lakes but also help explain the “power, mystery and innate danger that comes from these sacred waters.”

Drawn from Legends explores work from the Permanent Collection that illustrates the stories that continue to resonate with us. The exhibition features the work of artist such as Bob Boyer, Carl Ray, Jackson Beardy, Doug Lafortune, Ivan Otterlifter and Roy Thomas amongst many others.
