Event Navigation

We are deeply saddened by the passing of Ahmoo Angeconeb.  Ahmoo has a special place in the hearts of many of us at the Thunder Bay Art Gallery.  Since the 1980s we have been honoured to know and work with this extraordinary man – a born artist, respected Elder, teacher and mentor, world traveler, father and grandfather – and most of all, a generous and accepting person.

Ahmoo had his first solo exhibition, called AHNEESHEENAHPAY STILL LIFE, at the Thunder Bay Art Gallery in 1987.  The Gallery owns 43 works by Ahmoo, including the iconic Man from Caribou Totem and Man from Caribou Totem Box (1995), two sculptures that welcome each and every visitor to the Gallery.

While he was greatly influenced by Norval Morrisseau, Ahmoo developed his own personal style and often focused on Anishnawbae cosmology in his work.  His detailed drawings on black paper express Ahmoo’s interpretation of traditional stories from the Anishnawbae people.

Family Migration, 2001. Colour pencil on paper. 76 x 112 cm, Collection of the Thunder Bay Art Gallery, Purchased on the occasion of the 25th Anniversary of the Thunder Bay Art Gallery in recognition of the contribution of the Gallery’s volunteers, past and present, 2001.

Description of the work:

Eight figures (3 adult and 4 children and 1 infant) traveling on a flat boat that curves upward at the bow and has a bird’s head at the stern.  The figures and boat all face to the left.  The adult figures have antlers and ears like caribou, the children have just the ears.  The morning star, sun, moon and a bird (facing left) are drawn above the boat.  A sinuous serpent (facing right) is drawn below the boat.  All executed in turquoise and white coloured pencil on black paper.  Depicts the move of the artist’s family to Whitefish Bay from Kejick Bay when he was a child.

Ahmoo Angeconeb’s work can be found in collections across Europe, Canada and the US.  He will be greatly missed.
