Creative engAGING Arts Fair is Tomorrow Nov 8

The Art Gallery is hosting a unique event early next month.  The Creative engAGING Arts Fair is for everyone 55+

Wednesday Nov 8 from 2-7 pm in the Heritage Building at the CLE. 

​Come try something new or try a creative interest once again. It could be dance, a musical instrument, a visual art activity, rug hooking, spinning, wood carving or photography.

There are 15 different ‘Activators’ providing hand-on activities in a vibrant, friendly atmosphere.  There will be lots of things to see and do.  We will have a café open during the fair.  As this event takes place on Wednesday Market Day, people can also visit the Thunder Bay Country Market for refreshments.

​Admission is pay-what-you-can (suggested $2).

The Activators in Detail

Thunder Bay Lapidary & Mineral Society – gems and jewelry

  • Rock on! The Thunder Bay Lapidary & Mineral Society will guide you in making jewelry craft. A geologist will be on hand to answer your questions about minerals. Learn more about this fun educational club that meets regularly and hosts talks about the geology of the area, invites you to bring in your rock samples for geologists to identify or to participate in a day long field trip in the area.

Army of Sass – dance

  • Try it! The Army of Sass will be getting you up and moving in a Sassy Heels Dance Style. Army of Sass provides dance fitness and performances for ages 18-80.

Coran’s- music

  • Get tuned up! Teachers from Coran’s Music will be on site and demonstrate some sample parts of their music lessons. With instruments on hand and an immediate sign up bonus at their booth, perhaps you have found your next creative pursuit.

Thunder Bay 55 Plus

  • Learn more about the variety of arts programs offered at the 55+

Thunder Bay Public Library

  • Put words to paper.- Explore creative writing exercises through object description, visualization; story and word prompts. Takeaway a Colour me calm.
  • The Thunder Bay Public Library provides a variety of creative programs for the community.

Thunder Bay Art Gallery

  • The Thunder Bay Art Gallery hosts a number of workshops and opportunities to engage in the arts.
  • You can find out more about upcoming workshops, exhibition or volunteering opportunities at the Fair.
  • Create with the inspiration of Everyday Light. Eleanor Albanese and Betty Carpick will guide you through using memories to create visual arts experiences.

Eleanor Albanese, creative writing, arts educator, and theatre artist

Local artist Eleanor Albanese, encourages others to find what resonates for them, and to trust their own creative voices.  Choosing an image that resonates with you is the starting point to share stories and memories as you record on strips of ribbon and fabric and create weavings on large frames.  Eleanor works in the community on a variety of projects, including with the Alzheimer’s Society at the art gallery.

 Betty Carpick, multi-disciplinary artist.

Betty Carpick loves making art with everyday and unexpected materials. She will guide you through creating with inks and stitching as you explore the land. Betty has recently completed the Great Art for Great Lakes Project, inspiring the community to create and is a regular artist educator at the gallery offering children’s and inter-generational programs.

Willow Springs

  • Get creative by adding to the Community Stained Glass mosaic or make a metal etched mandala with Willow Springs.
  • Willow Springs provides inclusive creative opportunities in visual art, gardening, and food programming including a summer art series for adults, art programs at 55 Plus Centres, seniors’ retirement homes and long-term care facilities. We offer custom designed private art workshops, with or without a meal, for groups of 6 to 16 people. We invite anyone, especially seniors to bring your art project ideas

 BBAC – printmaking

  • Brian Holden will provide instruction to participants that will enable them to create and print an original image on paper.

The Baggage Building Art Centre provides a variety of programs for all ages. The Centre has an on-site printmaking studio and ceramic studio.

Painted Turtle

  • Explore new techniques and materials with the Painted Turtle.
  • The Painted Turtle offers a variety of classes and drop in opportunities or all.

Thunder Bay Carvers

  • Try your hand at carving.
  • The Thunder Bay Carvers will have examples of the woods and tools used and a big variety of actual carvings on display. Visitors will be able to watch carvers at work and also try their hand at carving using safe soap carving tools.
  • The Thunder Bay Carvers are a non-profit club that offers carving information and opportunities to people of all interests and abilities. They meet once a month and also hold ‘open carving’ at Our Saviour’s Church at the corner of River and Farrand Streets.

 10X10 – playwriting

  • write a play
  • 10×10 will lead you in creating a play in a few short steps. Follow a few steps to start the journey of creating an one-act play.
  • Find out more about 10×10 activities that you can join throughout the year – perhaps acting, directing or play writing?

 TBAY Spinners and Weavers

  • Spinning and weaving on a ridged heddle loom and a four-harness loom demo with hands on experience.

Rug hooking – Elaine Curtis

  • Find out what traditional rug hooking is. Try out this unique craft and find out more about where you can go and learn how to create for yourself with the help of others who have been rug hooking for several years.

Gentlemen of Harmony

  • The Gentlemen of Harmony would like to show how easy it is to join the Gentlemen of Harmony and learn how to sing barbershop style songs. You might get a chance to see a small performance from a quartet groups to help display this style of singing.
  • Learn about the history of the Gentlemen of Harmony and their support of the George Jeffrey Children’s Foundation and the Thunder Bay Food Bank. With years entertaining many of the residents of our local Homes for the Aged, the Gentlemen of Harmony are presently preparing to compete in a 2018 International Barbershop Chorus Competition.

Music Workshop

  • And the beat goes on … Sean Jesseau will present mini lessons on hand drums, merlin stringed instrument, guitar, and will answer musical questions. The Music Workshop offers weekly lessons for all ages in guitar, piano, drumset, bass, vocals, percussion and intro lessons.
